And rarely do you find any that actually cost to join (although sometimes they do). Thus making this one of the top online business opportunities in the world for just about anyone.

You can also use free blogging platforms such as blogger and wordpress to start a site. Then, you can use free internet marketing strategies to promote them. So basically you could build a successful online business without spending a cent. Although I do recommend getting your own domain and hosting, and investing some money on a few resources to help you along the way, but it’s not necessarily required. That’s what makes this such a popular way to make money on the internet and why it made the “top business opportunities” list.

However, just because it’s easy to get started with affiliate marketing, and can be done by spending very little money, if any, doesn’t mean you will be able to simply join a program and be cashing in the next day. Keep in mind / Final thoughts…

One thing to keep in mind is that, even though an online business is relatively simple to start, it is still a real business and you need to treat it that way. Make sure you form an LLC or incorporate, or whatever is best for your particular situation (figure that out and do it). Most of that can be learned and done through LegalZoom or another similar service.

Also, be sure to learn about the ins and outs of running a small business in general. Make sure any paperwork you might need to file is done, figure out if there are any restrictions, licenses or permits needed, biz plan, taxes, etc… Basically just get your ducks in a row. I made the mistake of building my first internet based home business without doing those things, and I regret it to this day. It may not be the “fun stuff” but it’s worth doing, trust me. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Comparing the “Parallel Profits” Business System to Others

So, how does the parallel profits model compare to some of the other popular online business models?

Let’s see…

Before I get into it, I just want to point out that the key factors I use for gauging a business opportunity are as follows:

Realistic Profit Potential – I think of this both in the short term and into the future; while taking away the typical false-hope and unrealistic goals most people have. I’m only looking at this as something real and achievable. So, are the potential profits realistic?
Time Commitment – Is there a lot of personal time required to run the company or not?
Speed of Results – Will it take years or months to get significant results?
Startup Cost – Do you need to put in a large investment up-front?
Predictability – Can you predict your results to a certain degree?
Business Sale Probability – Could you sell this company for a large influx of money in the future?

Your criteria may be somewhat different but I think we can all agree that the above are important factors for judging business opportunities.

Okay let’s take a quick look at some other popular online businesses…

* Affiliate Marketing – This is absolutely one of my favorite internet business opportunities so I’m not going to bash it. In fact, it is easily number 2 behind the local business model taught in parallel profits and in a very close race for the top spot. I love the affiliate business model and have done very well with it for many years. There’s no doubt about that.

However, it can be a slow starter with very low short-term profits, and often times can take several months before you make any money. Plus, it is not uncommon to spend a lot of time and/or money to eventually realize your efforts are a dud.

For that reason, I still put the local business marketing model (aka parallel profits) at the top.

* Information Products – Yes, they can definitely be very lucrative, but they are equally as unpredictable as affiliate marketing. You never really know if your info product is a winner until you’ve spent a bunch of time and effort on it (and probably money). Then, if it fails, you’ve lost all that with nothing to show.

* Blogging – This is among the most famous ways to make money online but also one of the most difficult. The problem here is that most people are under the delusion that they can start a blog one day and get rich the next. Ha! That does NOT happen. I’m not gonna go in-depth on this because there’s about a million posts out there explaining this one. But I will say that it’s NOT nearly as simple as you probably think it is.

* Amazon Whitelabel – Yeah, this is a solid business model, but it usually takes a while to get going, and you almost certainly need to be selling huge volumes in order to make a decent profit nowadays.

*Dropshipping/eCommerce – This is okay but paid traffic (Facebook, Adwords, Etc) is volatile these days. It often takes a lot of trial-and-error (and wasted money) to find the right combination to make this work.

* Kindle – No denying how steady this can be once you get going. However, you need to sell a load of books if you want to make good money. If you are willing to work hard at it and be happy with maxing out at lower profits compared to some of the other business models, it can be great. But that is not for me!

* Software As A Service – One of my major business partners loves building SAAS businesses. He has helped create many of them very successfully, and has therefore gotten me involved in them. So I know they can be a home run, but I also know this is probably the most expensive of this list to start and is very unpredictable. I wouldn’t recommend it for the vast majority of start-up entrepreneurs.

Ok, that concludes the comparisons. Yes, there are obviously others, but I’m not going to discuss each and every one of them. The above are among the most popular and that should be sufficient for the purposes of this review.

Now that Empower Network’s Blog Beast launch has finally happened the internet is being flooded with all the fake reviews from members who are doing nothing more than deceptively promoting the program in order to try getting you to join under them. This tends to happen every time something big launches in the internet marketing world where people are able to make money promoting it.

So, I figured it was time for me to give you my real review of the new Empower Network blogging system (also known as ENv2, Blogging Beast, BlogBeast Redemption, and several other things) so you can get totally unbiased information and make a truly informed decision on whether it’s for you or not. You won’t find any affiliate links, hype, false deception, or anything else shady in this review. It is simply my opinions of the program based on personal experience, history, what I have heard from people I trust, and what I have seen thus far.

There are people who swear it’s an all out scam, there are people who are livid at the way they launched blog beast, there are people who couldn’t care less either way, there are people who say this is the best way to start an online home business since the internet was invented… and everything in-between. Love it or hate it, one thing is for sure, ENv2 is causing quite a stir in the make money online world.

There are huge name internet marketers on the inside and plenty of them who are very outspoken against it, which is understandable considering the intro BlogBeast video for ENv2 starts out by bashing some of the biggest names of the internet marketing industry. Anyway, that’s beside the point, I’m not here to give a lesson in how you should or shouldn’t create a launch video. I’m just here to give you my honest review of the Empower Network ENv2 Blog Beast Viral Blogging System.

Personally, I have opinions on both ends of the spectrum. Some things I really like about Empower Network Version 2 (ENv2) and some things I think are not good at all. I will warn you ahead of time that I have cancelled my membership. Maybe that tips you off to how my review will turn out and ruins it for you, or maybe it makes you curious to read on? Hmmm…

* Why should you listen to me?

You might be thinking to yourself, “Who is this guy and why should I even listen to him?”

Well, I’ve been a full time internet marketer and blogger since way back in 2003 so I have more than a decade of experience in this industry. In that time, I have been a part of more than my fair share of network marketing programs, home business opportunities, and every other type of money making system.

I’m also a moderator of several work at home, online business, and entrepreneur related forums where I’ve had the duty of reviewing hundreds of different programs in order to help the members with their questions. Plus, I own or manage well over 100 websites and blogs in all sorts of different niches.

I guess you could say that I have basically seen it all and done it all when it comes to the world of making money online. I can pretty much see all the angles and look past all the hype of this industry in order to truly see whether something is legit or not. I know how to make money with various programs and whether they are worth the investment, or not.

* What is ENv2 Blogging Beast?

Well, if you are completely new to everything to do with the original Empower Network and the new ENv2 “Blog Beast” Viral Blogging System, then here’s a quick rundown of the features:

* Simple Audio and Video Blogging
* Maintain Multiple Blogs at Once
* Easy Mobile Blogging
* Re-Blogging
* Social Sharing
* Content Locking
* Full Training
* Business Opportunity
* Lots of Kool-Aid to Drink (Ok, I may have added that one myself)

If you dig deep enough, you will find that ENv2 is a blogging system crossed with an affiliate program combined with a network marketing company married to a MLM commission structure. Yeah, that pretty much covers it all when it comes to internet home business opportunities and make money online programs. However, this really is a hybrid that pretty much takes them all into account and tries to include the best parts from each one.

There’s no denying that Empower Network offers one of the biggest blogging communities and best publishing platforms on the internet. They also give very good leadership training products and services to internet marketers and small business owners. It was originally created to help struggling internet marketers and home based business owners build and grow a successful online business. Their flagship product is a viral blogging system that boasts more 70,000 users and growing all over the world.

Their new version 2, called Blog Beast, will cost you $25 per month at the lowest level, which is the same price as the original EPN system. It gets progressively more expensive depending on what you want to buy and whether you want to go “all in” or not. Honestly, I think it’s insanely expensive if you do go all in and buy every level.

If you were already a member of Empower Network then you will be automatically switched over to the new system, and the first thing you will notice is that ENv2 Blog Beast features a bunch of new features that were not in the first generation of the EN system. It is undoubtedly faster and easier to use than it was before. Also, members can now run multiple blogs from one account.

Another new and prominent feature of version 2 is the mobile app. This allows you to sync your blog(s) from your smartphone, tablet, or other mobile device. With the blog beast mobile app, you can easily record and upload videos on the go. It also makes it a lot easier to post and share all types of content without needing any technical skills. Therefore, you can really work from home with your blog, or from just about anywhere.

That all sounds great on the surface, and to many people it might be more than worth the cost of the ENV2 blog beast system. However, to me it sounds like a bunch of stuff that you can do on your own using existing platforms and plugins without needing to rely on empower network or pay for it.

Simply put, it is a fairly easy to use publishing platform and business system designed to give you a relatively simple way to make money blogging. Hence, the “viral blogging system” they are always ranting and raving about. There is also an affiliate program you can join to promote empower network itself in order to earn residual income from people who join under you. Not bad, but really nothing special.

* What are the Blog Beast 17 Blogging Blunders I keep hearing about and are they good information?

Officially, it’s actually called, “The 17 Super Dumbass Blogging Blunders” but that’s beside the point. I’m not going to say a whole lot about them simply because I am not here to give away their information, and you can get the ebook and video for free anyway if you just go opt-in to their sales funnel. Then, you can just turn right around and opt-out so you don’t have to keep getting their emails if you have decided that the empower network version 2.0 isn’t for you.

I will say that the information in the free 17 blogging blunders ebook is solid and legit. I’ve been a blogger for many years and can attest to the fact that most of the advice they give is true and useful. The worst part about it, in my opinion, is that they constantly plug their blog beast platform throughout the ebook. But that can be expected and if you can ignore it, then it’s pretty good. Plus, it’s free, so there’s no reason not to at least give it a quick read to see if you can pick up some tips to help you build a more successful blog, and therefore and more profitable online business.

* Is Empower Network Version 2.0 a scam or is it a legitimate way to start an online business?

There are a lot of people asking if empower network is a scam. No, it isn’t a scam. Some people like to be quite loose with the “scam” word and throw that label on everything. But I’ve seen a lot of real scams and this is not one of them.

Honestly, it is a legit way to start a blog which can be turned into a real internet business and be a great way to make money online. However, I do think it is overpriced and not actually needed anyway. Plus, their upsells are ridiculously expensive and certainly not nearly as vital to success as they try to make them out to be. But a scam it is not.

* Really though, can I make money online with the “Blog Beast” viral blogging system?

Yeah, of course you can, anyone with a blog can! But that doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to, or that you have any sort of advantage by taking this route. To be honest, most people with blogs never make a cent and many of them spend a lot of time and effort trying. For every person making a living from a blog there are 10,000 more that aren’t earning anything, or if they are lucky they are maybe scraping in enough to pay a bill or two.

That’s not intended to discourage you. I truly think starting your own business website/blog is an excellent idea! Everyone should do it, and I mean that with all my heart and soul. Honestly, I do! However, the fact is that most people who do will never make any money from it.

I’m just being real here. The ENV2 blog beast cheerleaders want you to believe that you will just join up, do a bit of writing, share some content, and then retire on a tropical beach somewhere. But that’s not going to happen! I can promise you that right now.

Yes, if you are willing to learn how to choose a profitable niche, do keyword research, write compelling content, blog consistently, implement on-page search engine optimization (SEO), learn and keep up to date with off-site SEO, master social media marketing, become a video marketer, and a whole bunch of other things just like any other internet marketing specialist or professional blogger has to, then yes you can certainly build a successful online business blog in order to make money on the internet. It sure as heck won’t be easy and it definitely won’t happen quickly, but you can do it if you are truly dedicated to putting in a LOT of time, effort, money, sleepless nights, arguments with your spouse, loss of friends, and no more television, or wasting time on anything unimportant!

* Should I join Empower Network?

In my opinion, you would be far better off starting your own blog with your own domain on your own hosting. There are a ton of advantages in the long run to doing it that way and very few disadvantages. Once you get past all the crazy hype, all you are really getting with Empower Network is an expensive blog with a network marketing program to promote on it, and a little bit of training. That’s nothing special by any means.

I will say that using the ENv2 blogging system may give you a slight headstart as far as search engine rankings are concerned simply because they have build up a lot of authority already, and your blog gets some benefit from that juice. But that’s the biggest benefit I see to using it, and it’s not nearly as enough of a positive for me to recommend the program.

You could even start a completely free blog on something like blogger.com and essentially do the exact same thing without spending a dime, and basically have the same benefits and risks.

* Final thoughts

The part that I dislike the most about the entire system, and the major reason why I cancelled my account before spending too much of my time or money with them, is because THE BLOG IS NOT YOURS! Let me repeat that… The blog is NOT yours!

That means if you ever stop paying, or if Empower Network ever gets shut down, or they ever re-structure to change the entire program, or anything else happens — You will lose all that time and hard work you have put in, and all the income you have coming in from it. You can literally lose your entire online business overnight at no fault of your own. It’s completely out of your control.

Trust me, this happens a lot more often than you might think with programs like this. I’ve been around the internet marketing industry long enough to have seen it happen many times, even with the most highly touted and seemingly rock solid programs. You never know what’s going on behind the scenes even if everything looks great on the surface.

This is the main reason why I do not recommend becoming a user of ENv2 Blog Beast.

Do you honestly believe they will be around forever? I don’t! And when they go down, your blog goes down with them along with all your time, hard work, content, and income! So, stay away folks.

If you need something you can basically just plug into almost immediately without needing to learn much of anything in order to get started, and you don’t mind paying the inflated costs for that luxury or care about the fact that you are at their mercy and could lose it all in an instant, then I say go for it. For some people that is okay but I don’t think it’s worth it, so I am not recommending it.

I’ll admit, it sounds awesome and very hard to resist, but that’s exactly what they want so you will join! They are great marketers – there’s no denying that.

Quick summary:
– Do I recommend joining? No, I don’t, but honestly it could be a lot worse. I’m close to the borderline on this one, so I wouldn’t completely blame you if you did.
– Is it a scam? Nope, I do admit that it is a legitimate online business blogging system, but still I am saying you can do better.
– Can you make money with ENv2 blog beast? Yes, it’s possible.
– Will you make money with it? That depends, but probably not.

And that, my new friend, is my honest review of empower network version 2… ENv2… blog beast… aka several other names. Hell, I don’t even know what it’s called. ;)

How to Find a Legitimate Online Business Opportunity to Join

Learning how to make money online with a real internet business can be a very daunting task. You will be pulled in a million different directions until you either get information overload or you jump from one thing to another until you eventually give up. There are so many programs, systems, opportunities, products, tools, ebooks, resources, blogs, and other information out there all telling you that they are the best of the best! It’s nearly impossible to know what to believe.

Let’s say you have caught the entrepreneurship bug and have been plowing through all the information online, and have finally come across a business opportunity or program that looks great and you are interested in. How do you really know if it is legit and worth joining?

One thing you can do is research it on Google or Bing. However, doing that will rarely give you the information you need if you don’t know what to look for and how to research properly. You will almost certainly come across a bunch of sites that are pretending to give an honest review but in reality they are doing nothing but trying to get you to join under them. This may not be so obvious to a beginner.

You could also ask about it on internet business forums. The problem with that is you will usually either get a bunch of people who don’t have any firsthand knowledge of it at all telling you it’s a scam, or you will get just as many people who just joined and don’t know any more about it than you do telling you how amazing it is. Either way, the information is not very useful to you.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t do your own research, you definitely should, but you should also be very skeptical of information you do find. When someone is calling crying out scam that is often not actually the case at all. Even the best businesses will always have someone who thinks they are a scam. And the reverse of that is also true. The worst scams out there will have plenty of people convinced they are legit. That’s the way they work. So you need to get a ton of information from a lot of different sources and see what the conclusion is as a whole.

Another thing you can (and should) do is ask a veteran of the industry their opinion on the opportunity, or whatever it is before you get into it. They will probably be busy so you may or may not get them to actually do it, but it’s worth a shot.

Take me for example, I am always happy to lend an honest opinion to someone when they ask. I still remember when I was a struggling newbie and felt completely lost all the time, so I try to help people in that same situation whenever possible. I didn’t forget where I came from and never will.

But, why would you listen to me?

Well, first of all, I have been an internet marketer and business owner for a long time. I started back in May of 2003 right after I graduated college. That’s like an eternity in the online marketing world. So, I am a seasoned veteran at this point.

In that time, I have pretty much seen it all and done it all. I’ve been involved with numerous network marketing systems, promoted countless affiliate programs, joined many business opportunities, built hundreds of websites and blogs, moderated several business forums, purchased thousands of dollars worth of products and services, and just about everything else. I am also the co-founder of a highly successful digital marketing company in the “real” world. We have an office with employees, hundreds of clients, and all that other cool stuff.

I’ve failed miserably many times over and have even been all out scammed on a few occasions along the way. I’ve seen so many products, services, software, opportunities, and other things come and go that I couldn’t even begin to remember them all. I’ve survived several huge Google updates that destroyed so many other people and their online businesses. And so much more. I could go on and on.

The lessons I’ve learned along the way are golden. With every failure, every scam, every update, every change — I became that much more “battle tested” and stronger. All of them led to me eventually becoming a very successful internet marketing specialist and business owner.

My knowledge and experience far surpasses most other internet marketers out there. I’ve even been doing this longer than the vast majority of the “Gurus” and A-List bloggers you have undoubtedly heard of at one time or another.

These days, I have multiple income streams coming from several different businesses and websites I’ve built over the years. I even still get a check every month from the very first program I started my home business with more than 10 years ago.

Technically, I could just go sit on a beach somewhere all day, every day, and live off the money I am already earning and would continue to earn passively even if I never worked again. However, I love what I do and don’t want to stop! Plus, I want to be absolutely sure that the financial future is secure for me, my wife, and my daughter.

I’m an entrepreneur at heart and that means I always keep an eye out for any lucrative business opportunities that I might come across. And when I see something that looks legitimate and worth pursuing, which is quite rare these days, I research it fully before making a decision. There’s no jumping in blindly with me anymore. Those days are long gone!

By now, I can pretty much tell if something worth giving a closer look just by glancing over it real quick. Then, after looking a little more closely, I can usually tell if it’s good or not. If so, I start researching it deeper and put it through a very strict selection process. At this point almost all of them fail my tests and I move on. But, every once in a while, one of them passes my rigorous process. It’s rare but occasionally it happens.

Now, I told you all of that so I can tell you this…

After more than 3 years (yes, that long) since the last time I found an opportunity worth joining, I have finally come across one that not only meets all of my requirements, it exceeds them!

I’ve already done all the research and testing for you. I’ve already joined and checked it out thoroughly. I’ve already made sure it is real and legitimate. I’ve already done everything to be absolutely certain this is worth putting time and effort towards for both me, and you!

At this point, you don’t have to do anything except get in and go for it. No more wasting your time looking for the best business to join, or jumping from one opportunity to the next only to find they aren’t what they seemed on the outside. I did the work for you.

This is a REAL online business. You aren’t going to get rich overnight. It’s not a churn and burn operation. It’s not some loophole you can exploit that will close soon. It’s not a push button tool that promises to spit money directly out of your computer screen. It’s none of that crap!

Is Body by Vi a Scam? Unbiased Review from an Industry Veteran!

The body by vi (visalus) business opportunity is all the rage right now. I can’t seem to go a single day without hearing about it either online or from my personal offline network. So, I have begun to wonder, is it a good program or a scam? Well, here is my body by vi review…

With over 10 years experience as an internet marketer and more network marketing programs under my belt than I would care to admit, I have become very good at separating the good opportunities from the hyped up crap. My scam radar is finely tuned. I can spot them from a million miles away.

At first glance it seems that everyone and their dog is making millions from the visalus business opportunity. And even more of them are earning BMW’s. But are they really? I even personally know two people who supposedly became BMW eligible within their first couple months after joining body by vi. Although I have yet to see those cars and have a suspicion that I never will.

One thing you have to remember is that this is a network marketing opportunity, plain and simple. I am sure there are a lot of people in the organization that would try to convince you otherwise. But they are either oblivious to the fact that it is, or they are flat out lying to you. They probably even have their own name for the type of system it is. I bet it’s something that sounds really cool and cutting edge.

However, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck — It’s probably a duck! In this case it’s a network marketing program, or multi-level marketing (MLM) as the terms are often used interchangeably. Although they do have some differences but that’s a whole other issue itself, so I won’t get into it here.

So that means they use all the same old tricks and promises that network marketing companies have been using for years. These will be stuff like this…

* Lots of hype.
* The best product/service ever.
* Telling you to bring in your warm market, which is just another name for your friends and family.
* Having group meetings where everyone gets together and goes through the same presentations over and over again.
* Success story after success story.
* A “proven system” that will work if you just follow it.
* Flashy cars, vacations, and shiny objects to get you wanting them too.

The list goes on and on. It’s always basically the same. The only things that change are the slight spins each new company puts on them. If you’ve seen one MLM opportunity, you’ve seen them all. Yes, some are better than others, but they all use the same set of tactics.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not saying there is anything inherently bad about network marketing, MLM, or whatever other name you want to call it. I’ve made a lot of money in several of them over the years. And I do think they can be a great way for the average person to start their own home based business.

My issue is more with what they don’t tell you. Of course, it’s in their best interest to show you all the awesome stuff about their products, services, program, business opportunity, and so on. They only want you to hear all the success stories and great stats that are in their favor. It would be dumb for them to tell you the real truth.

The truth is that 99% of people who join these things never make any money at all. Actually the vast majority of people LOSE money for months on end until they eventually quit. They never get that flashy BMW or that amazing vacation, or any of that other cool stuff that helped lure them into joining in the first place. Though the same could be said about pretty much any type of business; it’s just that it seems to happen a lot more in MLM because of all the hype and ease of entry.

For every one person you see killing it with body by vi, or any other network marketing business, there are 100 who have spent a ton of time, energy, and money without getting anything in return. Sure, you might be the one that goes out there and turns into a rock star, but it’s much more likely that you will lose money while pissing off all your friends and family at the same time.

Here are some questions you likely have and my answers to them…

* Is Body by Vi a scam?

No, by definition it technically is not a scam. But they do use a lot of hype and employ at lot of tactics to give you a false sense of hope.

* Will I make money with the ViSalus business opportunity?

Maybe, but probably not. As I said above, most people actually lose money with these types of programs. And if you do earn any money it will likely only be a little bit. The people who truly earn a solid income are few and far between.

* Does the 90 day challenge actually work?

Honestly, I don’t know. I haven’t done it and don’t pan to. My guess is that it probably does work if you truly follow the system exactly as planned. But the same can be said for almost every other fitness program. Doing that is a lot easier said than done.

* Should I join?

That is entirely up to you. If you have read everything in my review above, and you still think this is something you can do, and are truly being honest with yourself, then go for it. I’m not going to make up your mind for you.

In my opinion, when compared to other network marketing opportunities out there right now, it does appear to be among the better ones if you are looking to start a home business (although this could change VERY quickly – as often happens in the MLM industry). From the little I have seen it could also be a good way to lose weight and get in shape. I can’t say for sure though because I have not personally done it. I’m just speaking from years of experience with these types of things.

That pretty much does it for my review of Body by Vi, 90-Day Challenge, ViSalus home business opportunity, or any of the other names it’s called. Take it or leave it. The choice is yours. If you think this is for you then take the leap because it may very well be what you need, but don’t believe all the hype and jump in blindly. Trust me, it’s not as great as they make it sound, I would bet on it.

5 Issues to Consider Before Launching Your Online Business

Is it possible to make good money working online? Yes.

I support myself as a full-time freelance writer, and several of my friends also earn or supplement their income working online. But before you hook up your computer and wait for the money to come flowing in, there are a few things you need to consider.

Choose a Business Idea You Love

Launching a new business is hard work. For at least the first several months, you’ll probably devote long hours to it during the day and dream about it at night. The only way to keep your sanity – and to make money – is to choose a line of work that you feel passionate about.

For me, it’s writing. For one of my friends, it’s online bookkeeping and accounting. For yet another friend, it’s selling high-end gifts. Whether you want to be a web designer or a sales agent or anything else, make sure you select a job that you will look forward to doing day after day.

Watch Out for Scams

There are many legitimate business opportunities online. Unfortunately, there are also many scams. Scams are a way to try to get either money or free work out of an online business person.

In a money scam, for instance, you might be offered a high-paying job. The only stipulation is that you need to pay for the training manual, or for an initial supply of the product you’re selling or for being mentored by a more experienced salesperson. Once you send the money, the scammers disappear, leaving you with nothing but a bad email address.

A work-related scam usually starts off with an email from someone admiring your online skills. The so-called customer then explains to you that it is company policy for you to complete an assignment before being paid. You spend hours, days, or even weeks on the assignment, submit it and never hear another word or see a dime of the money you’re owed.

The best way to avoid scams is to remind yourself that if an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Commit to Working Hard

Don’t count on a four-hour workweek a month after you found your business. In fact, you’ll probably be spending significantly more time working on your online business than you would spend working for an employer.

When you start an online business, you are usually the only staff (unless you can sweet talk your spouse or your kids into helping out). This means you are the CEO, the marketing team, the secretarial pool and the creative brains behind the venture all wrapped into one. It takes time to balance all these roles successfully.

Don’t Rest on Your Laurels

When I first started writing, I was lucky enough to find a client whose business accounted for the vast majority of my monthly income. I didn’t bother to worry about finding additional clients because I thought I didn’t need to. Then my main client went bankrupt and I was suddenly in the position of needing to find new customers very quickly.

Be smarter than I was. Never depend on just one or two clients to keep you afloat. In fact, it’s a good practice to set aside three to five hours a week for marketing no matter how many good clients you have.

Don’t Stay on the Bottom Rung of the Ladder

When you begin your business, you may need to take some low-paying jobs to get some credentials as well as to make ends meet. Starting at the bottom, though, doesn’t mean that you have to stay there. As soon as you get the credentials you need, consider raising your rates and start soliciting the bigger fish in the pond. That’s the best way to make good money online.

Launching a new online business is always a little intimidating, but knowing to avoid these five newbie traps can increase your income and your chances of success.
